Advocates say deportation of man to Somalia put on hold after appeal

first_imgThe Canadian Press EDMONTON — Advocates say the federal government has called off the deportation of a former child refugee to Somalia following a request from the United Nations. The African Canadian Civic Engagement Council said Abdilahi Elmi, 34, is being held at the Edmonton Remand Centre and was to be deported on Monday. The council said he arrived in Canada at the age of 10, was granted refugee status, and was later taken into foster care in Ontario.Council president Dunia Nur said they received word the Canada Border Services Agency has put the deportation on hold.“We are very thankful that Canada has accepted the United Nations’ recommendation and suggestion,” Nur said Friday in an interview. She said Elmi left Somalia as a child, has no family there and does not speak Somali.“We were all scared for him. We were thinking as soon as he gets deported is he going to live longer than an hour?,” she said. “He was being deported to the world’s worst scariest and dangerous country.”Canada Border Services Agency officials could not immediately be reached for comment.Earlier this month the agency said it decided in June that Elmi should be deported to Kismayo, Somalia because he has committed “extensive crimes within Canada and is considered a danger to the public.”His lengthy criminal record includes assault charges.Elmi’s lawyer, Idowu Ohioze, said he received word from a CBSA enforcement officer about its decision in a terse email Friday afternoon.“Hello, Mr. OHIOZE. Please be advised that the removal of ELMI scheduled for August 26, 2019 has been cancelled. Thank you. Mike Fraser #11987 Inland Enforcement Officer, Enforcement and Intelligence Operations Division.”Ohioze said it is his understanding that the CBSA will now take up to 60 days to prepare a report for the UN on why it believes Elmi should be deported. He noted that people across Canada have been speaking out on Elmi’s behalf.“He is very pleased and very grateful for the support he has received from the Canadian public,” he said.“I will be working to see if he can be released from the remand centre.”last_img read more

Asia stocks fall as China selloff spills into Hong Kong Europe up

by Kelvin Chan, The Associated Press Posted Jul 8, 2015 1:46 am MDT Last Updated Jul 8, 2015 at 4:40 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Asia stocks fall as China sell-off spills into Hong Kong; Europe up as Greece gets last chance HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s main stock index plummeted as much as 8.5 per cent on Wednesday as a sell-off in mainland Chinese shares accelerated despite new measures to support the market. The China rout also battered investor sentiment elsewhere in Asia, with other major markets finishing sharply lower. European benchmarks, though, opened higher and the euro rose as investors there woke up to news that European leaders gave Greece a last-minute chance to avoid a ruinous exit from the euro currency. In early European trading, France’s CAC 40 rose 0.5 per cent to 4,626.03 and Germany’s DAX edged up 0.1 per cent to 10,688.83. Britain’s FTSE 100 added 0.4 per cent to 6,456.49. U.S. stocks were poised to open lower. Dow futures were down 0.9 per cent to 17,519.00 and S&P 500 futures lost 1 per cent to 2,052.50.In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng tumbled in the last hour of trading, a victim of the turmoil in mainland Chinese markets, where stocks have been sliding for three weeks despite increasingly desperate measures by authorities to stem the decline. The Hong Kong index trimmed its losses in the final minutes of trading to close 5.9 per cent lower at 23,516.56.The Shanghai Composite ended nearly 6 per cent lower at 3,507.19 despite the latest slew of official measures aimed at supporting the stock market. Measures unveiled Wednesday included the government ordering state-owned companies to buy shares. Beijing also hiked the amount of equities insurance companies can hold and promised more credit to finance trading. In an unusual tactic to stem the losses, more than 1,000 Chinese companies have had their shares suspended from trading or are applying for such permission, according to a report in the newspaper China Business News. That would be almost 36 per cent of the total of 2,802 companies traded in Shanghai and Shenzhen.“Everyone has come back to reality. The so-called bull market is over for now,” said Jackson Wong, an associate director at United Simsen Securities Ltd.He said the Hong Kong plunge may have been exacerbated by mainland Chinese panic selling their holdings in Hong Kong because their shares on mainland markets were frozen. The Shanghai benchmark is down more than 30 per cent since peaking June 12 after a sizzling yearlong rally.Millions of novice investors piled into the Chinese market when it was at its most frothy. Some made big profits but the slump has left many with shares worth less than they paid and hoping for a rebound so they can sell.Among other Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 3.1 per cent to 19,737.64 and South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.2 per cent to 2,106.21. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 shed 2 per cent to 5,469.50.Elsewhere, frustrated European leaders fearing for the future of their common currency gave the Greek prime minister a last-minute chance Tuesday to finally come up with a viable proposal on how to save his country from financial ruin. Overcoming their surprise when Alexis Tsipras failed to present them with a detailed reform blueprint, the leaders reluctantly agreed to a final summit on Sunday.Indebted Greece needs a financial lifeline from its European creditors who have been pressing for more austerity in exchange for bailout funds. Without that it’s expected to default, paving the way for its exit from the euro currency. In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude was down 26 cents to $52.07 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 20 cents to close at $52.33 in New York on Tuesday. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 11 cents to $56.96 a barrel in London. The euro rose to $1.10041 from $1.1008 on Tuesday. The dollar was little changed at 121.51 yen from 122.52 yen. read more

BP sees Q1 earnings slide as low oil prices take their toll

FILE- In this Feb. 2, 2016 file photo, the logo of BP is seen outside its petrol station in East Molesey, southwest London. British energy producer BP saw its first-quarter earnings slump by 79 percent as lower gas and oil prices continued to take their toll, the company reported Tuesday, April 26, 2016. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham, File) by Danica Kirka, The Associated Press Posted Apr 26, 2016 6:51 am MDT Last Updated Apr 26, 2016 at 8:00 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email BP sees Q1 earnings slide as low oil prices take their toll LONDON – Cost-cutting and a solid performance from the refining and marketing arm helped British energy producer BP cushion the hit from low oil prices in the first quarter.Though the company reported a 79 per cent slide in earnings, its share price spiked sharply higher Tuesday as the results were better than anticipated in markets.BP reported that its underlying replacement cost profit — the oil industry standard, which excludes non-operational items and the value of oil inventories — dropped to $532 million from $2.58 billion in the first quarter of 2015. Though that’s quite a precipitous decline, the result was about $100 million better than analysts had forecast.BP also said it would maintain its dividend at 10 cents a share — a key factor as the stock is held by many pension funds.“We think the key takeaway is the strong message on dividend sustainability today,” brokerage firm Bernstein said in a statement. “BP is clearly delivering on its cost reduction plans which are offsetting commodity price weakness and delivering earnings and cash flow ahead of expectations.”Oil companies rushed to cut costs and curtail investment as oil prices tanked over the past year-and-a-half, striking 12-year lows in January. Though prices have recovered somewhat since, they remain well below the $100 a barrel posted as recently as September 2014. Brent crude, the benchmark for international oil, traded at $44.82 a barrel on Tuesday, up from the $34 a barrel average in the first quarter but down from $54 in the first quarter of 2015.In recent years, much of the profitability of major oil producers like BP has come from high oil prices. Because of the lower oil price environment, they have sought to keep a lid on costs. BP said Tuesday it had reduced cash costs by $4.6 billion over 2014 levels and cut organic capital expenditure to $3.9 billion in the first quarter from $4.4 billion a year earlier.“Despite the challenging environment, we are driving towards our near-term goal of rebalancing BP’s cash flows,” Chief Executive Bob Dudley said. “Operational performance is strong and our work to reset costs has considerable momentum and is delivering results.”BP shares rose 4.3 per cent to 376.1 pence in midday trading in London after reaching a high of 377.65.The company’s earnings were driven by the so-called downstream business, primarily refining and marketing, which reported an underlying replacement cost profit of $1.8 billion, compared with $2.2 billion a year earlier. The upstream business, including exploration and production, posted a loss of $747 million after a profit of $604 million in the first quarter of 2015.In a milestone for the company, BP said the bulk of the costs from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon accident are now known after a U.S. District Court in April approved a settlement with the U.S. government and Gulf states. BP set aside an additional $917 million in the first quarter to cover costs related to the accident, bringing the total pre-tax charge to $56.4 billion. read more

Football AD Gene Smith talks Kevin Wilson and new coaching changes

Senior Vice President and Athletic Director Gene Smith sits down with The Lantern on Jan. 24. Screenshot by Colin Hass-Hill | Assistant Sports DirectorOhio State’s 31-0 loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl came as a shock to many. What happened after the Fiesta Bowl wasn’t surprising to anyone.Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson were hired to co-coordinate the offense while former coordinators Ed Warinner and Tim Beck took on other opportunities. Day will coach the quarterbacks and Wilson will coach tight ends on top of their duties as offensive coordinators. Warinner was named Minnesota’s offensive line coach and Beck will coordinate Texas’ offense.OSU Senior Vice President and Athletic Director Gene Smith told The Lantern in an exclusive interview that those discussions of revamping the coaching staff happened immediately after the game in Glendale, Arizona.Smith said Meyer approached him to talk about staffing after the conclusion of the Fiesta Bowl. Meyer and Smith worked out a schedule over days of meetings, pinpointing selective dates when Meyer wanted to have matters concerning his staff completed.“(Urban Meyer) began to talk about people and who he wanted to get, and so we went through that process and he kind of had a vision of what he thought he needed to do,” Smith said. One of those people was Wilson, whom Meyer has known for a long time. Wilson resigned from his head-coaching position at Indiana University on Dec. 1 during his sixth season with the Hoosiers amid “philosophical differences” with Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass. Multiple reports cited Wilson’s treatment of players, including one player who told the Indianapolis Star that Wilson forced him back during an injury.Smith said the first thing discussed regarding Wilson was the terms of which he left Indiana.“We talked about that from the beginning before (Meyer) even made the call (to Wilson),” he said.Meyer and Smith discussed, at length, how they would vet Wilson before offering him the position. The two assembled lists of people who could talk about Wilson as a coach and as a person. The first name on Smith’s call list was Glass, who Smith said is a good friend of his.“(Glass and I) kind of went through the details of what happened there and I felt comfortable at the end,” Smith said.“Urban and I came together and we talked about what we found out and we felt comfortable. Kevin sat at this table and we had a good conversation on what happened there, and how it’s going to work here. He was thoroughly vetted and we had a good, candid conversation. He’ll fit our culture fine.”Smith declined to share details on the conversations he had with Glass or Wilson to respect their privacy.Smith said he also reached out to people who were at the University of Oklahoma when Wilson was the Sooners’ offensive coordinator from 2002 to 2010. Smith added that his one-on-one, sit-down conversation with Wilson was “phenomenal” and Meyer’s familiarity with Wilson’s career helped him decide that the former Indiana coach was ethically suited for the job.Regarding the other hired coaches, Smith expressed his excitement for Day and new linebackers coach Bill Davis, who replaced former co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell.“Ryan Day is, like, off the chain and Kevin Wilson is like a mad scientist. They’re really, really good people and they fit our culture,” Smith said. “We had Bill Davis in mind and he was already here (as a defensive analyst). And so that was a benefit for us.”Editor’s Note: This is Part 1 of The Lantern’s conversation with OSU Senior Vice President and Athletic Director Gene Smith. Part 2 will print in Thursday’s paper. read more

Skeptical Football The NFC South Isnt The Worst Division In NFL History

Now that the dust has settled on the penultimate week of the NFL season, 10 teams have clinched playoff spots and 16 more have been eliminated. The Philadelphia Eagles are in the latter column. Back in Week 1, Benjamin Morris (who’s on vacation this week) and I made a chart showing how often teams have made the playoffs since 1990, given their records at various points during the season. Take a look at the Eagles’ progress through the playoff “grid.”The Eagles sat at 9-3 through Week 13. From 1990 to 2013, just two teams, the 1993 Miami Dolphins and the 2008 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, managed to miss the playoffs after starting with that record. The 2014 Eagles now join them, dropping three straight to Seattle, Dallas and, worst of all, lowly Washington, thanks to two field goals missed by Cody Parkey and a killer Mark Sanchez pick.Because the NFL is cruel and unfair, here’s the same chart for the Atlanta Falcons:If Atlanta beats Carolina at home — the Falcons are currently favored by around 4 points — they’ll make the playoffs as the under-.500 champion of the lowly NFC South. This would make the Falcons the first 2-6 team and the first 5-9 team to make the playoffs since 1990. They’d become the second team to make the playoffs despite incurring a five-game losing streak during the season. And they’d do it despite winning only one game outside their division — they are 1-9 outside the NFC South and 5-0 within it.This sort of mediocrity could be short-lived. The first and only 7-9 team to make the playoffs was the 2010 Seattle Seahawks, a member of the 14th-worst division in the history of the NFL. Three seasons later, the Seahawks were Super Bowl champions and the NFC West was the second-best division in NFL history, winning 30 of its 40 non-division games. Make fun of the Falcons — and the NFC South — while you still can.The worst division in historySpeaking of, time to get in our NFC South shots. Going into Week 16, the teams in the NFC South had 9.5 wins against non-division opponents in 38 chances this season (counting Carolina’s tie against Cincinnati as half a win). That .250 winning percentage matched the 2008 NFC West, which ended the season with just 10 non-division wins. Last week, Tampa Bay did its part by getting smoked by the Green Bay Packers, but a fourth-quarter Carolina comeback against Cleveland pushed the division to 10.5 wins, giving the NFC South a .263 winning percentage. This means that the 2008 NFC West remains the worst division in sports history. The table below shows all 897 division-seasons that have taken place in the four major American sports leagues since divisions were instituted.1I performed a similar analysis of “worst divisions” last year for Deadspin, but I didn’t take out games won within each division. Whoops! Also note that for our purposes I’m considering “divisions” to be league organizations that divide teams into more than two groups — the NBA East and West “divisions” before the 1970-71 season are pretty much what we now consider conferences. In all, there have been 296 division-seasons in the NFL (since 1970), 190 in the NBA (since 1970-71), 226 in MLB (since 1969), and 185 in the NHL (since 1974-75). These seasons are sorted by winning percentage in non-division games.2Ties were counted as half a win, and the NHL’s silly overtime loss points were counted simply as losses. The NFL dominates the list, claiming 16 of the 17 worst divisions. The 1978-79 Smythe Division in the NHL takes the fifth spot (.290 non-division winning percentage), and the 1971-72 Central Division in the NBA comes in at 28th (.353). You have to go all the way to 94th to get to the first MLB division on this list, the 2002 AL Central (.412).Of course, the NFL plays a lot fewer games than the other leagues, and its divisions have fewer teams in them (just 4.4 teams on average since they were instituted, compared to the NHL’s 5.2, MLB’s 5.6 and the NBA’s 5.7.) It’s “easier” for a mediocre division to lose 30 out of 40 games than it is to lose 300 out of 400.But there’s a way to correct for this a bit. There’s a possibility that the 2008 NFC West really was average in quality, but just unlucky. We can employ a binomial distribution to figure out the likelihood that was the case, calculating the chances the NFC West would get 10 or fewer non-division wins in 40 games if it were a .500-level division. The 25 worst divisions by this measure are listed below. (In order to use a binomial distribution we have to omit ties, which is why these records are a little different than those in the sortable table above.)The NHL’s 1978-79 Smythe division stands alone here, with about a 1 in 162 billion chance of secretly being average. It’s immediately followed by the 1977-78 Smythe, the 1975-76 Smythe and the 1976-77 Smythe. The ’70s were a dark period for fans of the Black Hawks, Canucks, Blues, North Stars and Scouts/Rockies.MLB sneaks into the Top 25 with the 2002 AL Central’s odds of 1 in about 7,000 of being average. The first NFL division doesn’t come until the 39th spot. The smaller sample actually helps here, as an NFL division would have to go 0-40 in non-division play to beat the terrible 1978-79 Smythe, and 4-36 (.100) to beat the 2010 Atlantic in the NBA.There are other mathematical ways to go about this, and one could also argue that the NFL’s small sample size means that non-divisional records aren’t necessarily a great measure of quality. (The 2014 AFC South has a lower cumulative Elo rating than its NFC equivalent.) For now, let’s agree that the Smythe Division was pretty bad in 1978-79 and so is the NFC South in 2014.A freshman year to rememberWeek 16 is a great time to make fun of terrible preseason predictions, but some pundits got it right. The 2014 wide receiver draft class was touted as one of the best and deepest in NFL history.3Not by everyone; here’s one more prediction to make fun of. It has certainly lived up to the hype.Odell Beckham Jr. has been the most dominant, but he’s far from the only rookie receiver to have an immediate effect. The table on the left shows the draft pick and expected points added (from Advanced Football Analytics) for the nine best rookie wide receivers in the league. Note that the New Orleans Saints’ Brandin Cooks suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11, truncating his production. He was arguably the Saints’ best receiver up to that point. It’s not normal for this many rookie receivers to do so well:This season, rookie WRs have contributed 10.1 percent of the league’s receiving yards and 11.6 percent of its receiving touchdowns. Those are the highest figures since the merger, excluding the 1987 season, when replacement “rookies” were brought in from Weeks 4 through 6 to break a players’ strike.Let’s return to Beckham, who has had 90+ receiving yards in eight straight contests. Ninety yards is a great game but not an extraordinary one — 12 other receivers had 90+ yards in Week 16 — so stringing together a bunch of them doesn’t sound so impossible. And yet, since 1960, there have been just 16 streaks of 90+ yards in at least six games. Only five players have a streak of at least eight games:The chart above shows the yards that Calvin Johnson (2012), Michael Irvin (1995), Dwight Clark (1982), Bill Groman (1961) and now Odell Beckham Jr. (2014) accumulated during their respective streaks. Johnson is the only one to top Beckham’s yardage through eight games, and that 2012 run is probably the best stretch of receiving in NFL history. In Week 17, Beckham will try to tie Michael Irvin’s streak of nine games, against the Eagles in a game of no other real consequence. In fact, a lot of games are of very little consequence this week. Thanks to Philadelphia’s loss to Washington, the NFC wild-card race is already wrapped up, while Cincinnati’s Monday night win leaves just one spot available in the AFC. If you root for one of the 14 teams with playoff berths or seeding on the line (or one of the two in contention for the top draft pick), you can check out some Week 17 game scenarios in the interactive below. For everyone else, enjoy your week off. read more

€245m yielded by Revenue in compliance campaign for those with two pensions

first_imgTHE REVENUE COMMISSIONERS office has yielded some €24.5 million in tax, interest and penalties in a compliance campaign targeted those in receipt of both state pensions and private occupational pensions. In late 2011, Revenue undertook to amend pension recipients’ tax records from the Department of Social Protection  with up-to-date pension information for the year 2012 onwards to ensure future tax compliance.Anyone receving a state pension, wit no other soruces of income, is not liable for income tax on it. However, if a person is in receipt of an additional income source like an occupational pension from a former employer, they may be liable to pay tax on their state pension if their total income is above a certain level.Revenue also began, in March 2012, to examine PAYE taxpayers who had state pensions that had not been returned for prior years.“As is normal practice for any compliance work that they undertake, the Commissioners focussed initially on the highest risk cases, which are those cases where the annual non-Department of Social Protection income exceeded €50,000,” Minister Michael Noonan explained in response to a recent parliamentary question. They then moved to those whose non-State income was between €40,000 and €50,000 and then to those whose non-State income was between €30,000 and €40,000. In March 2013, all cases involving self-assessed taxpayers who had not declared their state pensions and had annual non-State income in excess of €30,000 were examined.Where underpayments of tax were discovered, those concerned were notified and discussions were held with regard to the collection of any arrears.Noonan sad that, as of 16 December this year, 10,302 examinations have been concluded. The total yield is €24.5 million with approximately 500 cases still under enquiry.Read: Concern CRC pension payments creating ‘costflow advantage’ for Mater>Read: Thousands join pensioners’ protest against Budget cuts>last_img read more

Take a virtual ride on the worlds steepest roller coaster

first_imgIf you’re planning a trip to Japan and like to get your thrills from crazy roller coasters, make sure to check out the Takabisha located at Fuji-Q Highland’s theme park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. Finished in May of 2011, the Takabisha isn’t just any ordinary coaster. It’s actually the world’s steepest roller coaster. The name Takabisha translates to “dominant” in English, and the coaster certainly does dominate. The Takabisha began testing in June and media and press were allowed to ride it a month later. One member of the press, known on YouTube as Purplefinale, got a chance to ride the Takabisha and videotaped the whole thing. You can check out the video below, and also visit his YouTube channel to see a handful of other videos from his rides.AdChoices广告You can see by the video that the ride starts with a sudden drop into pitch black darkness. It then does a 360-degree roll and the car is launched down a long tunnel at over 60 miles per hour. After a few loops, the cars reach a chain lift hill that carries the cars up to 141 feet. After slowly creeping forward, the car gets ready for its 121-degree, beyond-vertical drop. There are a few more loops and inversions, and the ride ends in just two minutes. Personally, I think the roller coaster looks absolutely terrifying, but oddly enough, no one in the video made a peep, which is rather peculiar to me as I’d be screaming my head off.Purplefinale does warn on his YouTube page that taking a picture on a coaster is extremely dangerous and that a fatal accident might happen. Meaning, don’t try this at home, kids. Leave the documenting up to the professionals.Besides watching the coaster in action, it’s also interesting to think of how the park built the 3,300-foot ride. The Takabisha took $37 million to build. You can watch the monster of a coaster being built in the time-lapse video below. The park is located at the base of Mount Fuji, so you can see the mountain in the background of the video. The video shows the building process throughout the seasons, and you can actually see the amount of snow on Fuji’s peak wax and wane.Via Japanprobelast_img read more

Trump promises action very rapidly after travel ban halted

first_imgWASHINGTON — President Donald Trump promised Friday to take action “very rapidly” to protect the U.S. and its citizens, a day after a federal appeals court firmly kept his travel ban on hold. He didn’t reveal his planned next step to control travel into the U.S. from countries that he considers potential terrorist threats.“We’ll be doing things to continue to make our country safe,” Trump pledged at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “It will happen rapidly. We will not allow people into our country who are looking to do harm to our people.”Trump added that still expects to prevail in a legal challenge to his travel ban, despite Thursday’s 3-0 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that kept it from going back into effect.“Ultimately, I have no doubt that we’ll win that particular case,” he said.Trump stressed that voters elected him to keep the country secure, “so we’ll be doing something very rapidly having to do with additional security for our country. You’ll be seeing that sometime next week.”He added that “extreme vetting” is still planned for would-be visitors or immigrants from other countries.Conjuring images of unspecified danger, Trump said he had “learned tremendous things that you could only learn, frankly, if you were in a certain position, namely president. And there are tremendous threats to our country. We will not allow that to happen, I can tell you that. We will not allow that to happen.”last_img read more

Krispy Krunchy Chicken is convenient

first_imgWhy: Krispy Krunchy Chicken is a convenience store-based quick service restaurant in 41 states as well as Malaysia and American Samoa. Located inside the Battle Ground Chevron on Northwest 13th Avenue, it offers Louisiana-style menu items for lunch or dinner, including several sides to please the whole family.Atmosphere: The Krispy Krunchy Chicken kitchen is located in the rear of the mini mart. Available selections are pre-cooked and displayed in a warming case. Condiments, napkins and plastic ware sit on the counter for self service. There is no dining in.What I tried: I tried the Cajun chicken tenders with a side of mac and cheese and jambalaya. I also sampled a regular honey butter biscuit and a blueberry biscuit. The chicken is pre-marinated and flavor-injected. I found it pleasantly spicy, tender and moist. The coating on the chicken was extra thick, and it had a fair amount of crispiness to its texture. I found the mac and cheese quite saucy. The macaroni was very soft. The jambalaya was a tad dry and mildly spicy. It had small bits of sausage incorporated into the rice. The biscuits were extremely sweet and somewhat greasy. The flavor of the blueberry biscuits reminded me of the Jiffy-brand blueberry quick muffins I made as a kid, only with at least twice the blueberry flavoring.Menu highlights beyond what I tired: Tenders and bone-in chicken are options available for family-size meals. Buffalo wings come in traditional, Cajun sweet, sour and Krispy varieties. Sides include mashed potatoes and gravy, red beans and rice, mac and cheese, jambalaya, fries and biscuits.last_img read more

Credit: WSFThis month the World Soy Foundation (WSF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) to work together on future disaster relief efforts. Members of the U.S. soy family asked the WSF to find a way for U.S. soybean farmers to be able to respond in the wake of disasters such as the recent typhoon in the Philippines. WSF’s new partnership with FMSC allows U.S. soybean farmers to donate to disaster relief efforts which will ultimately deliver U.S. soy protein to those in immediate need of food.FMSC’s main food product is a package of textured soy protein, rice, vitamins and minerals engineered by food scientists from Cargill and General Mills. FMSC relies entirely on volunteers in the U.S. to pack their soy-based food products; over 800,000 volunteers have packed U.S. soy into FMSC food packages over the past two years. This strategic partnership gives U.S. soybean farmers a direct way to become involved in the delivery of U.S. soy protein to those in need, highlighting the nutritional value of soy to all those along the chain of delivery – food packers, development workers and ultimately consumers around the world.last_img read more

Camp Melacoma close to reopening

first_imgIt appears that Washougal’s Camp Melacoma will reopen this summer, now that it has a way to treat water containing naturally occurring arsenic that forced its closure four years ago. “We can hardly wait to get the kids back in here,” said Dodi Jensen, who with her husband Andy Jensen are caretakers of the 120-acre former Camp Fire facility. The couple are inviting volunteers this weekend and the next to help clear trails, paint and prepare the bunkhouses to welcome campers this summer. The rustic youth camp and surrounding forest are more than 13 miles north of state Highway 14 in Skamania County, just off the winding Washougal River Road. The Jensens expect to install a water treatment system within the next 30 days, said Dodi Jensen. She reported good news from a recent site inspection by state and county health department officials, Janet Cherry, a regional engineer with the Washington Department of Health, and Nikki Hollatz, an environmental health specialist with Skamania County.“They’re not going to make us do the 11-month pilot study,” Jensen said, referring to a typical waiting and testing period to be sure the system is working.last_img read more

KB4100403 cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803

first_imgKB4100403 cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803 by Martin Brinkmann on May 24, 2018 in Windows – Last Update: May 24, 2018 – 26 commentsMicrosoft released the second cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803, and it comes after the the release of similar updates for previous versions (1709, 1703 and 1607) of the Windows 10 operating system. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the new cumulative update for the most recent version of Windows 10 shares several changes with cumulative updates released in the past days for older versions of Windows 10.Still, the changelog is a lot shorter and the majority of issues in Windows 10 version 1803 are not addressed by it, unfortunately. On a personal note: the update did not fix that Edge or Windows Defender won’t start at all on one of my Windows 10 devices.KB4100403 for Windows 10 version 1803The update lists six changes only:Updated Time Zone information issue fixed.Addressed a reliability issue that would cause Microsoft Edge and other applications to stop responding.Addressed a Windows Hello enrollment issue on systems with dGPUs.Fixed a power regression issue on systems with NBMe devices.Fixed an issue that caused closed-caption settings to be preserved after upgrades.Addressed a web worker issue in Internet Explorer. Those are all the changes that Microsoft lists in the changelog. It is possible that the update includes other changes as Microsoft lists “key changes” only in release notes.Microsoft lists two known issues on the page and notes that they have been resolved with this update. While KB4100403 fixes issues with certain Intel and Toshiba SSDs, Microsoft recommends that users wait for the June 2018 Patch Tuesday update before the upgrade to Windows 10 version 1803 is made. How to get the updateMicrosoft notes on the support article that the update is available through Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog website.A quick check on Windows Update did not return the update at the time of writing though. You can download the standalone update from the Microsoft Update Catalog website and install it manually on devices running Windows 10 version 1803.As always: unless you experience any of the issues fixed in the update, you may want to wait with the installation of cumulative updates as Microsoft’s recent updates track record is not the best.Create a system backup if you don’t want to wait with the installation.SummaryArticle NameKB4100403 cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803DescriptionMicrosoft released the second cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803, and it comes after the the release of similar updates for previous versions (1709, 1703 and 1607) of the Windows 10 operating system.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

BRUSSELS (AP) – The European Commission wants to impose carbon emission charges for all flights using Europe’s airspace.Wednesday’s proposal by the 28-nation bloc’s executive arm would force airlines to buy carbon emission permits for all flights within Europe but also for the parts of intercontinental flights that use the bloc’s airspace. That means, for example, that a U.S. airline flying from New York to Frankfurt would have to buy pollution rights under the EU emission trading system for the part of the route within Europe’s airspace.
