Bannon out – but hold the cheering

first_imgThree Marine Corps generals in the White House: Chief of Staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Joint Chiefs Chairman Joseph Dunford. When the news broke that Steve Bannon, the racist “alt-right” adviser to Donald Trump, had been forced out of his job at the White House and was returning to his home at Breitbart News, it was easy to feel elated. (This writer confesses to blurting out “Yeah!”)Bannon is a far-right ideologue who feels comfortable with the Nazis and the Klan. He advised the president to blame “many sides” in Trump’s notorious press conference equating these murderous, racist groups with the protesters who came out against them in Charlottesville, Va. Of course, Trump is perfectly capable of saying such vile and dishonest things without Bannon’s advice.Bannon’s ouster came on Friday, Aug. 18. The country was in the middle of the biggest uprising against white supremacy and fascism seen in decades. It was easy to interpret Bannon’s departure as a concession to the militant movement against the right, which has sprung up all over the country and brought tens of thousands of Black, Brown, Indigenous and white people into the streets in militant rejection of the Nazis and Klan, often at grave personal risk.So it’s great Bannon’s gone. But he was fired for the wrong reasons. The White House is now largely in the hands of generals, both active and “retired.” The White House Chief of Staff is Gen. John Kelly. The National Security Adviser, and a major rival of Bannon, is Gen. H.R. McMaster (active duty) and his deputy is Maj. Gen. Ricky Waddell. In addition, the position of secretary of defense, usually a civilian, has been given to Gen. James Mattis. Gen. Mark S. Inch has been put in charge of the Bureau of Prisons. And there are many more. Why do the generals despise Bannon? Because besides being a racist, Bannon is an “economic nationalist,” who sees involvement in foreign conflicts as a drain on the U.S. capitalist economy. What really got him in trouble with the generals was when he told a reporter at The American Prospect, a liberal imperialist magazine, while referring to north Korea: “There’s no military solution, forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.” (Aug. 16)This came at a time when the Pentagon was making daily threats against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea over its nuclear defense. And it was preparing for huge, expensive war “games” aimed at that country, which began on Aug. 21.The generals in the White House certainly don’t want the public to think all this is futile, not when their buddies, the military contractors, are raking in hundreds of billions of dollars from the Pentagon war machine.Another sticking point is the war in Afghanistan. Three days after allowing Bannon to be sacked, Trump got before the cameras and announced a big increase in U.S. troops to be sent to Afghanistan. Breitbart News, with Bannon now back at his desk, immediately attacked Trump for repeating the failed policies of his predecessor, President Barack Obama. This whole struggle is a falling out among thieves. There’s only one way to fight racist reaction at home and imperialist war abroad: Build the mass movement, particularly based in the most oppressed sections of the working class, that has no stake in propping up this dying capitalist system.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Corrected-RBC and HMDA finalized: Now what?

first_img(I’m blaming it on a lack of coffee. A previous Version of this blog references HAMDA. I Know its HMDA)Yesterday was the type of day I love, because it means that there will be a need for bank attorneys for years to come. Not only did the NCUA finalize its risk-based capital regulations, but the CFPB finalized regulations that greatly increase the amount of data that credit unions subject to HMDA requirements must collect. In full disclosure, I have not yet gotten through the hundreds of pages of either proposal, and even if I had there is a year’s worth of material worth talking about. Nevertheless, here is my first attempt at highlighting which aspects of these new regulations are most important.Let’s start with the risk-based capital regulations. It largely tracks the changes that NCUA proposed when it reissued these proposed regulations. Most importantly, it applies to credit unions with $100 million or more in assets. NCUA will be periodically examining this threshold. The regulation takes effect January 1, 2019. NCUA estimates that 16 credit unions will have to make balance sheet adjustments or get more capital to comply with RBC requirements. continue reading » 9SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

LeBron Crashes into Fans

first_imgCLEVELAND -€” The wife of PGA champion Jason Day has been treated and released from a hospital after star LeBron James crashed into her during the Cavaliers’ win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Dec. 17.Ellie Day was carried from Quicken Loans Arena on a backboard, placed on a stretcher with her head immobilized and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. She was released early Dec. 18, according to hospital spokeswoman Tina Shaerban Arundel.James was scrambling for a loose ball in the fourth quarter of a 104-100 win over Oklahoma City, when the 6-foot-8, 250-pound All-Star launched himself into the air, plowing into Ellie Day as she sat next to her husband.James said he spoke with Ellie Day while she was being helped by medical personnel during a stoppage in play.“I squeezed her hand and she said she was OK,” he said. “She was just a little weary.”Before he was given more information on her, James, who scored 33 points and flirted with a triple-double, was noticeably shaken when he left the floor following the Cavs’ win.“For me, obviously, her health is very important and hopefully she is doing well,” James said. “The guys told me she’s doing great now. For me, just going for a loose ball, tried to keep the possession going, I just hate that that was the end result.”James said if she had been pregnant, he would have jumped over the first row of seats.A litte while later, James tweeted: “Ellie Day I hope you’re doing okay! My apologies! Hope u guys come back to another game soon. Love LJ!”On Nov. 11, Ellie Day gave birth to the couple’s second child, a girl named Lucy.Jason Day, who lives in a Columbus suburb, accompanied his wife as she was carried from the floor. The couple has attended Cleveland games in the past, and she was pregnant with their second child when they went to an exhibition game earlier this year in Columbus. That night, Cavs guard J.R. Smith bought cotton candy for the Days’ son, Dash, while he sat on the bench.Jason Day is the No. 2-ranked golfer in the world. He won the PGA Championship this year for his first major win on the PGA Tour.Shortly before his wife was injured, Jason Day took part in a promotion during a timeout. As fans cheered, the Australian chipped foam basketballs into the crowd.Cavs coach David Blatt said he was unaware of the severity of the collision. He has long been nervous about the safety of fans sitting so close to the action.“Honestly, the only thing I saw was LeBron diving for the ball to save the ball,” Blatt said. “I kind of got blocked and just saw a sea of bodies. We all hope that she’s OK. It’s always concerned me, the sideline seats. Always concerned me, because things like that, when you’re talking about players of this speed and physicality and effort level, it’s not a simple thing.“The powers that be are the ones that really need to decide how to deal with that. He made an honest attempt at the basketball, that’s all, obviously. We all hope she’s OK.”(TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer) TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

2010 New South Wales State Cup

first_imgApproximately 3000 players will be competing across 16 divisions at the event, ranging from Under 20’s to the Men’s 50’s division. The Hornsby Lions will be looking to take out back-to-back Men’s Open titles, and have had a strong preparation, winning the New South Wales Vawdon Cup Men’s Premier League final in November. Australian Men’s Open squad members, Dylan Hennessey and Jonathan Palau, will be influential in their side’s chances of consecutive titles. Penrith will again be a tough outfit to beat, and will be further motivated following losses to Hornsby in both last year’s State Cup final as well as last month’s Vawdon Cup final. Wests Tigers Rugby League star Benji Marshall will line up for the Wests Magpies in the Men’s Open division, and will be a large factor in his sides chances throughout the weekend. Marshall will be joined by Australian squad members Anthony Ziade (Men’s) and Daniel Rushworth (Mixed) in the Wests team, with the side to be coached by Australian Men’s Open coach, Tony Trad. Canterbury Bulldogs will be another team to watch, with four of the Australian Men’s Open squad, Steve Roberts, Stuart Brierty, Matt Prowse and Matt Bird, in the team. Another team to watch out for is Lismore, with some of Queensland’s best players making the most of Lismore’s close geographical location to their South Queensland region. With the likes of Nathan Jones, Ryan Pollock and Sebe Ray, as well as several up-and-coming players, Lismore will definitely be a team vying for a place in the finals.  Canterbury Bulldogs will be again the team to beat in the Women’s Open division, going for its fifth consecutive State Cup title. With the likes of Australian Women’s Open squad members, Louise and Claire Winchester, as well as Kelly Woods, this is definitely a team that will be around well into finals day. After its strong win in last month’s Vawdon Cup final, the Wollongong Devils will be going into the State Cup full of confidence.  The Devils are a young team, with current Australian Women’s Open squad members, Ash Dobbins, Nicole Beck and Jess McCall to lead the side. Last year’s runners up, Easts Roosters, will be another team trying to stop Canterbury’s State Cup dominance, with an experienced side including Kristy Judd, Giselle Martin and Melissa Pitfield as well as the talented Cobie Jane Morgan, Kristin Boss and Stephanie Sorrenson. After losing to Wollongong in the recent Vawdon Cup final, Wests Magpies will be hoping to hit back, and will be looking to Australian squad members, Stacey Lapham and Nicole McHugh to help do this. The Alliance side – players from the ‘rest of Australia’ who will compete in the 2011 Elite Eight competition, will also be competing in the Women’s Open division,  and will look to Australian Mixed Open squad member, Leah Percy, as well as Australian Women’s 30’s player,  Brooke James, to show their experience in a predominantly young side. Included in the line up are teams from Scotland (Men’s Open), the Alliance (Women’s Open) as well as Victoria, who will compete in the Women’s 20’s division. Round games will be played on Friday and Saturday, before finals are played on Sunday. CEOs, Hollywood actors got kids to elite US colleges though bribes, fake photos!

first_imgBOSTON: Nearly 50 people, including actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were charged on Tuesday in what federal authorities say was a $25 million scam to help wealthy Americans get their children into elite universities like Yale and Stanford. The most sweeping college admissions fraud scheme ever unearthed in the United States was masterminded at a small college-preparation company based in Newport Beach, California, prosecutors said. It relied on bribes to coaches, phony test takers and even doctored photos misrepresenting non-athletic applicants as elite competitors to gain admissions for the offspring of rich parents. Also Read – Imran Khan arrives in China, to meet Prez Xi Jinping”These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege,” Andrew Lelling, the U.S. attorney in Boston, said at a news conference. “For every student admitted through fraud, an honest, genuinely talented student was rejected.” William “Rick” Singer, 58, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges related to running the scheme through his Edge College & Career Network, which charged from $100,000 to as much as $2.5 million per child for the services, which were masked as contributions to a scam charity Singer runs. Also Read – US blacklists 28 Chinese entities over abuses in Xinjiang”I was essentially buying or bribing the coaches for a spot,” Singer said as he pleaded guilty to charges including racketeering, money laundering and obstruction of justice. “And that occurred very frequently.” Dressed in a dark sweater blazer, wearing glasses, her hair in a ponytail, Huffman, best known for her role in the TV series, “Desperate Housewives,” was among around 20 defendants who appeared in a Los Angeles court. Many were slumped in chairs and one woman tried to hide her face. Huffman’s actor husband William H. Macy, known for roles in movies such as “Fargo” and the hit TV series “Shameless”, sat in the front row of court wearing a gray sweater coat. Magistrate Judge Alexander MacKinnon ordered Huffman’s release on a $250,000 bond before a March 29 hearing in Boston. All the defendants who appeared in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles were likely to be released on bond, Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said in an email. Macy has not been charged in the case, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Schleifer told the court he was a “subject of the investigation.” Loughlin’s husband Mossimo Giannulli, a fashion designer known for his “Mossimo” brand, sat in court wearing a hooded sweatshirt and close-cropped hair. He was released on a $1 million bond. Loughlin, best known for her role in the ABC sitcom “Full House” and the recent Netflix sequel “Fuller House,” has also been charged. Huffman, Giannulli and Loughlin have yet to enter pleas. The case was the latest in a series of scandals that have rocked the high-stakes, high-stress world of admissions to top colleges. Prosecutors in Boston in recent years have also charged Chinese nationals with cheating on entrance exams, while the College Board, which administers the SAT tests, was rocked in 2016 by a security breach that exposed hundreds of questions planned for tests. Some 300 law enforcement agents swept across the country to make arrests in what agents code-named “Operation Varsity Blues.” Prosecutors have so far named 33 parents, 13 coaches and associates of Singer’s business. Other parents charged include Manuel Henriquez, the chief executive of specialty finance lender Hercules Capital Inc; Gordon Caplan, the co-chairman of international law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher; Bill McGlashan Jr., who heads a buyout investment arm of private equity firm TPG Capital; and Douglas Hodge, the former CEO of the investment management firm Pimco. Representatives for the companies, and for Huffman and Loughlin, either declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment. The alleged masterminds of scam and parents who paid into it could all face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. On a call with a wealthy parent, prosecutors said, Singer summed up his business: “What we do is help the wealthiest families in the U.S. get their kids into school.” No students have been charged and authorities said some of them were unaware of the scams. Prosecutors said it was up to the universities what to do with students admitted through cheating. Yale University and the University of Southern California (USC) said that they were cooperating with investigators. “The Department of Justice believes that Yale has been the victim of a crime perpetrated by its former women’s soccer coach,” Yale said in a statement. The coach, Rudolph Meredith, resigned in November after 24 years running the women’s soccer team. Meredith, who is accused of accepting a $400,000 bribe from Singer, is due to plead guilty, prosecutors said. His lawyer declined to comment.last_img read more

Excessive hygiene can cause antibiotic resistance

first_imgWhile maintaining hygiene is good for health, excess cleanliness could lead to antibiotic resistance often resulting to death and illness as well, suggests a new study. Comparing all existing microorganisms and antibiotic resistances, the researchers at Austria’s University of Graz, showed that microbial diversity decreases in areas with high levels of hygiene and the diversity of resistances increases. The team compared the intensive care unit of the institute with clean rooms subject to strong microbial control in the aerospace industry and with public and private buildings which have hardly any microbial controls. “In environments with strong microbial control in the intensive care unit and industrially used clean rooms, there are increasing antibiotic resistances which show a high potential for combining with pathogens,” said Alexander Mahnert, director at the varsity. The number of people who become ill and die from antibiotic-resistant germs is increasing worldwide, said the study, published in Nature Communications. Hence, the results indicated that a stable microbial diversity in clinical areas counteracts the spread of resistances. With the microbial control of pathogens already being used in cultivated plants and also in humans in the framework of stool transplantation, pursuing such ideas in indoor areas in future is recommended, said Gabriele Berg from the varsity. The team suggested regular airing, houseplants, deliberate use of useful microorganisms and reduction of antibacterial cleaning agents could be the strategies in maintaining or improving microbial diversity.last_img read more

Are The Rangers And Blackhawks Clutch — Or Lucky

How did these “hot” teams fare? They played 56 games … and won 28, or exactly half. So they’re basically doing as well as you would by flipping a coin. Previous clutch performance in playoff games doesn’t seem to count for much. There’s just a teensy tiny bit of good news for Blackhawks and Rangers fans. While a 50 percent winning percentage isn’t great, it’s slightly better than the overall winning percentage for teams facing elimination, which is 45 percent. (Teams facing elimination are usually underdogs because of selection bias: If they were playing as well as their opponents, they probably wouldn’t be facing elimination to begin with.) The difference is too small to be statistically significant, however.4A more thorough study would need to control for factors like home-ice advantage and overall team strength. Still, in my experience, your prior when working with hockey data should be that if something looks random, it probably is. The Rangers may have some other advantages late in playoff series. They have Henrik Lundqvist. And they’re an excellent five-on-five team, whereas their special teams are just average. Games 6 and 7 of playoff series historically feature relatively few penalties, which could play to the Rangers’ strengths. The problem is that Tampa Bay has been a very good five-on-five team, too. And should the series go to Game 7, the Lightning have also been pretty good in the clutch, with a 6-2 record in elimination games since 2010. But, hey: Having to win two coin flips isn’t so bad; the Rangers have come back from much worse odds before. Fear not, Blackhawks fans. Your team might have lost to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night, going down three games to two in the insane Western Conference finals. But the Blackhawks have battled back before. Since 2010, when faced with elimination from the playoffs, they have an excellent 9-3 record. And there’s hope for you, too, Rangers fans. Your team also needs a win — on Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals — to stay alive. But the Rangers have been through this before — a lot. Since 2010, they have been faced with playoff elimination 18 times. They are 14-4 in those games. There’s just one problem. Having a good record in elimination games doesn’t seem to predict much about how a team will fare the next time it must win or go home.In the table below, I’ve listed all instances in the NHL expansion era1Since 1967-68. in which an NHL team faced elimination in the playoffs but came in with a “hot” record in previous such games. A team qualified as “hot” if it was at least five games over .500 in playoff elimination games2I define an “elimination game” as one when a team faces elimination by losing — not when it has the chance to eliminate its opponent. So Tuesday’s Game 6 counts as an elimination game for the Rangers, but not the Lightning. If the Rangers win and the series advances to Game 7, it will count as an elimination game for both teams. in the current season plus the past five seasons.3So since 2010, for instance, for playoff teams this year. read more
