The Poverty of Words

first_img Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. Download my free eBook! You need to make sales. You need help now. We’ve got you covered. This eBook will help you Seize Your Sales Destiny, with or without a manager. Download Now Some salespeople send emails that, were they to be printed on paper, are three to four pages long. Other salespeople send long emails with bullet points and links in an attempt to pitch a meeting, even though they offer no trade equal or greater to the time they request. Still others, believing that they can win a deal or an appointment through the written word alone, provide a battery of PDF documents, as if they believe their prospective client is an insomniac and their collateral the cure.Words on a screen are not the same as words spoken. A conversation is a very different interaction than what one would write, and in complex human interactions, conversation is the written word’s superior. In email, your words are present, but you are not. The information is there, but the intention is not. Your voice isn’t being heard, and what’s missing may have more of an impact than what you wrote.Email doesn’t allow for body language, like a smile, or leaning forward or back. Email doesn’t allow for the visual cues that tell you that what you are saying is resonating with your dream client—or not, as the case my be. When a conversation is important, the best medium is almost always face-to-face (and I am only hedging here because there are exceptions to every rule, even when one doesn’t come immediately to mind).Email doesn’t allow for tone, or pregnant pauses, or long uncomfortable pauses. Email doesn’t allow your dream client to see you watching them speak, taking notes about what’s important to them, and following up with questions to gain a better understanding or clear up a misconception. Even the poor phone, the salesperson’s best friend, has taken a beating over the last decade at the hands of those who believe that the transformation of sales is from outbound to inbound. The truth is that a conversation with audio is better than an exchange of countless emails that don’t come close to the outcome a phone conversation would have delivered. We sometimes expect too much of a medium, asking more of it than it is capable of returning to us. The poverty of words is that they miss so much that is being said without being said.last_img read more

$1.2 Billion Injected Into National Service Corps

first_img State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green, made the disclosure in his contribution to the 2018/19 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (May 8). The Government will be scaling up youth training and employment under the National Service Corps Programme (NSCP) through a massive financial injection of $1.2 billion this financial year. The Government will be scaling up youth training and employment under the National Service Corps Programme (NSCP) through a massive financial injection of $1.2 billion this financial year.State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green, made the disclosure in his contribution to the 2018/19 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (May 8).“Last year, we put $200 million into the National Service Corps programme. Because we are seeing the results, this year, it is budgeted that we will put, from the HEART Trust/NTA, $800 million, and from the World Bank a further $390 million into the programme,” he informed. The brainchild of Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, the NSCP aims to create an avenue for young people, aged 18 to 24, to be fully empowered through education, training and certification. It falls under the Government’s Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) initiative, targeting job and training opportunities for unattached young people.Minister Green said that of the 6,345 applications received, a total of 4,762 youths have been trained in core skills and work-ready behaviours required by the labour market.Approximately 1,200 persons have been placed across 23 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), including the HEART Trust/NTA, Office of the Prime Minister; Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation; Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, National Land Agency; National Housing Trust; National Irrigation Commission; and the Ministry of Justice.Mr. Green said that an estimated $200 million has been spent under the programme from June 2017 to February 2018 for payment of stipend, rental of venue, training costs, meals and refreshments. He said the focus now is to transition the youth from training to employment, thereby creating a pathway for continued lowering of the youth unemployment rate. The latest report from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) shows that the youth unemployment rate has declined to 23.8 per cent from 33 per cent when the Government took office in February 2016.“That is an almost 10 per cent drop; it’s not by chance,” Mr. Green said, crediting the decline to “a targeted and purposeful approach to youth unemployment” by the Government. Mike Trout Somehow Found A Way To Get Better

201725.350.466.757.487.40717%19%7.0-6.211.0 PER SEASON 201119.220.281.390.296.1717226.0+7.20.7 Trout is on pace for new career bests in almost every offensive category, from the conventional (batting average; slugging percentage) to the wonky (isolated power; walk and strikeout rates3If Trout ended the season with his current stats in the latter two categories, they’d be tied with Trout’s 2016 and 2013 seasons, respectively.). And while Trout’s batting average on balls in play is outrageously high — currently at .368, a number that would be unsustainable for most players — it’s not too much higher than his career BABIP of .360. The man is simply the best at hitting ’em where they ain’t.At a more fundamental level, Trout’s plate discipline is approaching early-2000s-Barry-Bonds levels. (Maybe it’s no coincidence that Mets manager Terry Collins considered walking him with the bases loaded over the weekend.) He’s swinging far less at balls outside the zone but offering much more at balls inside the zone. He’s attacking the first pitch more than ever but working his way into some of the league’s highest rates of 2-0 and 3-0 counts. This strategy of selective aggression has only made the game’s top player even tougher to get out. However, there are also some signs that Trout’s hot start will eventually cool off. Despite the incredible power numbers, his exit velocity is down pretty substantially from the previous two seasons, and he’s making the best kind of contact4As measured by “barrels,” MLB’s designation for batted balls with a combination of exit velocity and launch angle that is associated with a batting average of at least .500 and a slugging percentage of 1.500. less than he did last year. Trout’s rate of home runs per fly ball — which measures how fortunate a player has been for his deep flies to find the stands (and not an outfielder’s glove) — is far above his career average. Even a player as great as Trout needs a dash of luck sometimes. To surpass his epic 2012 coming-out party, Trout was always going to need some lucky breaks. But considering that some of the luck he received as a fresh-faced youngster is offset by his improved hitting skills, Trout really only needs a little bit of good fortune to put up career-best numbers. And so far, that’s exactly what he’s gotten. 201422.287.377.561.402.27412267.0-6.47.9 201523.299.402.590.415.29014235.0+4.49.2 201624.315.441.550.418.23517206.6+3.910.0 201321.323.432.557.423.23415196.8-2.69.9 201220.326.399.564.409.23811228.6+16.310.5 In almost every category, Mike Trout is playing better than ever SEASONAGEAVGOBPSLGWOBAISOBBSOSPEEDDEFWAR WAR and DEF (defensive runs above average) are an average of FanGraphs’s and Baseball-Reference.com’s metrics. But probably not. and then begin the inexorable decline toward mediocrity (and retirement). But some special players begin their careers with such a bang that it’s difficult to imagine how they could get better, at least without breaking the game as we know it.Twenty-five-year-old Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout is one of those players. During his first full MLB season in 2012, Trout burst onto the scene with 10.5 wins above replacement (WAR),2Averaging together the competing versions offered at Baseball-Reference.com and FanGraphs.com. a tally that not only led the majors but also ranked as the 14th-best season by a position player since World War II. He was only 20 at the time; if he followed the typical aging curve, a 27-year-old Trout would make Babe Ruth look like B.J. Surhoff. Or maybe Trout’s sky-high WAR meant he’d already peaked (in production, if not skill), simply because such a year requires a ton of good fortune and might not be repeatable in future seasons. And through last season, even as Trout continued to build his case as the potential G.O.A.T., the 2012 campaign still stood as his greatest performance. But that might not be true anymore. Just a third of the way into the 2017 season, Trout is tracking for his best campaign yet. read more

New categories for legal fishing proposed in Parks amendments bill

first_img Recommended for you Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 17 Dec 2015 – The National Parks Amendments will create a new category for fishing if approved as is; Director Dr. John Claydon in a one on one with Magnetic Media said the two categories will expand where fishing can happen while preventing destructive practices. The change is to make current ‘fishing zones’ to be ‘non commercial fishing zones’ which means for residents there is a greater area protected for recreational fishing that is non commercial. The term ‘fishing zones’ will allow both commercial and recreational fishing to happen and three national parks will be expanded to give the fishing industry more places within which to fish. The proposal names them as: Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park, West Caicos Marine National Park and East Bay Islands National Park. Dr. Claydon said the proposals were determined by the National Parks Ordinance Review Committee. The members of the Committee were representatives of the Office of the Premier, Environment and Home Affairs, Attorney General’s Chambers, DEMA, National Trust, Planning Department, Water Sports interests, members of the Public and the Opposition party. The amendments which span 65 pages in a document posted at the DEMA website are already Cabinet approved, but the public contribution will be presented to Cabinet for further considerations.
