Domino’s and Ford to test self-driving pizza delivery service

first_imgDavid Curry Domino’s and Ford have partnered to test a self-driving pizza delivery service to customers in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The partnership will be part of Ford’s research into how customers respond and interact with self-driving vehicles.Randomly selected customers will have the option of trying the self-driving delivery service, according to The Verge. An engineer will be driving the vehicle and researchers will be in the back, taking notes.See Also: How drones will change our retail experience, our cities and our skiesThe customers will retrieve the pizza by using a unique four digit code that opens the Heatwave Compartment, where the pizzas are kept warm. Ford is looking to see if customers are nervous picking the delivery up from outside their home and how their interact with the car’s screens.“We don’t want to wait until we get everything done on the tech and remove the driver,” said Sherif Marakby, vice president of Ford’s autonomous vehicles division. “We’re trying to start doing the research. We still are working on the technology, because it’s not ready to be put on public streets. It’s simulating that the vehicle is in autonomous mode.”Domino’s recently announced its very own vehicle for delivering pizza, the DXP. The car is built for endurance and accessibility, two features that Marakby sees as key in the delivery business. The restaurant chain has tested robots and drone delivery services as well, as a possible way of delivering pizza faster in heavily congested cities.Ford wants to have a self-driving vehicle road ready by 2021 and is looking at taxi and delivery services as the key benefactors of its autonomous technology. Yes, you can run

first_imgIt’s one of the fastest ways to slim and tone and a natural next step for walkers. Our 6-week walk-to-run programme will have you clocking kilometres in no time!Running is only for the very fit? Hardly! For decades, scientists have been gathering research that proves running does more good than harm. It doesn’t damage knees and actually increases your chances of staying active as you get older. It’s also effective for weight loss, strong bones and mental sharpness-at any age! In fact, a new study shows it provides an extra 70% reduction in risk of c-on top of the improvement you’d get from walking for exercise. Try our easy plan to safely get you up to speed and running 3 miles straight at any fitness level.Keep it pain-freeYou need running shoes. “Also, make sure that your muscles are adequately strong and flexible. Weak and tight muscles lead to injuries,” says sports physiotherapist Dr Anand Gangwal, HOD, Physiotherapy, Sancheti Institute, Pune. “So you need to focus on strength training and stretches while working out,” he adds.* Run 3x/weekRun the given distance, taking walking breaks as needed. If you can run only 15 to 30 seconds at a time to start with, that’s okay. Stop before you’re out of breath, walk until you’ve recovered and then return to running. Gradually you’ll be able to go longer, until, after 6 weeks, you can cover a full 5 km without walking. (You don’t have to be able to run the entire distance to progress each week).* Cross-train 1x/weekIncorporating different types of workouts helps beat boredom and prevents injury by exercising different muscles. Try yoga to stretch and relax your muscles or cycling to give your legs a break from impact.* Walk 1x/weekThis is your easy exercise day, designed to get your blood flowing and loosen up your muscles. Walk at a pace that allows you to chat with a friend. We’re Running Converts!Still sceptical about taking up running? They didn’t think it was for them-until they tried it and were wowed by the incredible results.* “Emotionally, I am calmer now” Dr Vaneeta Kapur, Radiologist, 54, Delhi As a child, I was overweight, so I began walking and swimming at a very early age. About 15 months ago, I took to running in the IIT Delhi campus. It was Anita Bhargava of Running and Living who encouraged me. Initially, I would be out of breath after having covered just 500 metres. Now, I run for 6 kilometres at a stretch five days a week. I conclude my run with stretches. Last year, I completed the Delhi Half Marathon and surprised myself. My advice Make sure you choose soft ground for running and remember, you can take it up at any age. Stretch your limits a little at a time and you will be surprised when you look back to see just how far you have come.* “Running keeps my weight in check”Dr Divya Parashar, mental health expert, 35, Delhi Three years ago I overcame a battle with the bulge; having lost 34 kgs I wanted to test my fitness level by engaging in an active sport. I took to running and have taken to it for life. I’ve run in different places around the world and recently finished my sixth half marathon. Psychologically, long distance running is like life itself in so many ways-it’s all about your attitude, your pain, your fatigue and how you deal with obstacles on your way and about coping with pain. Physically, it has helped me keep my weight in check and allowed me to focus more keenly on what I do.My advice Buy good running shoes and gear, watch your posture and keep yourself hydrated while running. Also, you need to work on strengthening your upper and lower body muscles. Eat a balanced meal. -Interviews by Benita Sen10 fast fixes for every excuseMy knees hurt Fix #1 Shorten your stride No matter how cushioned the heel of your shoe is, your body isn’t designed to land on it when running, experts say. Shorter strides help you land on the middle of your foot, activating your body’s natural shock absorbers.Fix #2 Strengthen your hips and thighs One of the most common causes of knee pain is weakness in the thighs and hips, which absorb impact, says runner Alexis Chiang Colvin, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Go to prevention.com/knees for targeted toning exercises to keep you pain free.I keep getting blistersFix #3 Check your shoe size”Your feet increase as much as a size to a size-and-a-half when you run,” says coach Hal Higdon. “Especially for new runners, fluids can pool in your extremities, making them swell.”Fix #4 Invest in fancy socks Yes, good socks make a difference. Fabrics that ‘wick sweat,’ including synthetics and lightweight wool, limit friction-causing moisture.Fix #5 Reduce rubbing Apply a lubricant such as petroleum jelly to hot spots before putting your socks on.It feels too hardFix #6 Talk to yourself Exercisers who repeated an inspiring phrase (such as I am strong and beautiful!) aloud at least three times before running a mile went faster and felt better than when they did the same run without the mantra, according to research from the University of Nevada.Fix #7 Partner up Not only is exercising with a friend more fun than going solo, but the company also may make your workout feel easier, according to a recent British study. Researchers believe the camaraderie may heighten levels of mood-boosting hormones.I ‘m constantly windedFix #8 Slow down As you become fitter, your body will become more efficient at converting oxygen into energy. Then you’ll be able to go faster without getting breathless.Fix #9 Breathe through your nose and mouth Forget the old wives’ tale that air through your nose is better for you. Quite simply, you need more oxygen to support running or fast walking, and using both your nose and mouth is the most efficient way to get it, says Higdon.Fix #10 Practise belly breathing Allowing your chest and belly to expand as you take a breath relaxes your body so it can get oxygen to your muscles more efficiently during exercise, says Susan Joy, MD, director of Women’s Sports Health at Cleveland Clinic. Practise it while you’re on hold or waiting in line at the grocery store, then try it while you run.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more

US imposes sanction on Pak; may deny visas to Pakistanis

first_imgWashington DC: The US has imposed sanctions on Pakistan after Islamabad refused to take back its citizen deportees and visa over-stayers from America, warning that it may withhold visas of Pakistanis beginning from its senior officials. The State Department on Friday said that consular operations in Pakistan remain unchanged as of now but as a result of such a sanction mentioned in a Federal Register notification dated April 22, the US may withhold visas of Pakistanis beginning with its senior officials. Pakistan is the latest to join the list of 10 nations that have been imposed with sanctions under a US law according to which countries refusing to take back deportees and visa over-stayers will be denied American visas. Notably eight of these countries have been slapped with such visa sanctions under the Trump administration. Two of them Ghana and Pakistan have been included in the list this year. The other countries include Guyana in 2001, the Gambia in 2016, Cambodia, Eritrea, Guinea, and Sierra Leone in 2017, Burma and Laos in 2018. Under Section 243 (d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Secretary of State is required to discontinue granting immigration or non-immigrant visas to a nation upon receiving notice from the Homeland Security Secretary that the country has denied or is unreasonably delaying accepting a citizen, subject, national or resident of that country. The State Department tried to downplay the impact of the sanctions on Pakistan. “Consular operations in Pakistan remain unchanged, a State Department Spokesperson said when asked about the federal register notification. This is a bilateral issue of ongoing discussion between the US and Pakistani governments and we are not going to get into the specifics at this time, the spokesperson added. Former Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, feels that this will make things difficult for Pakistanis. This measure will create hardship for Pakistanis who want or need to travel to the US and could have been avoided if Pakistani authorities had not ignored American requests to respect their legal requirements for deportation, Haqqani said, days after the federal register notification. He said that Pakistan’s refusal to accept it’s citizen deported from the US is not new. Pakistan’s refusal to accept every Pakistani citizen deported from the US is not new. It seems that the US is no longer willing to overlook a wide range of official Pakistani behaviour. Bonhomie has been replaced by sanctions and restrictions based on Islamabad’s policy decisions, Haqqani said. While the law in this regard has been under existence since 1996, it is only in last several years that there had been increasing demand from lawmakers towards its enforcement against countries that had refused to accept deportees and visa over-stayers. In the last few years, India has been taking such deportees on special planes at regular intervals. The Trump administration after coming to power had said that it will strictly enforce such provisions by denying visas to people from those countries that refuse it accepting deportees and visa over-stayers. While section 243 (d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act was used only twice before 2017, the Trump Administration has been effective in using this provision on many countries, including Pakistan. However, the State Department federal register notification indicates that the number of visa denial under this sanction is far less. Since the law was modified to cover non-immigrant visas in 1996, 318 visa applicants have been affected, the notification said.last_img read more

Philadelphia 76ers Andrew Bynum Experiences Setback

The Philadelphia 76ers and their fans may never see Andrew Bynum play in the team uniform as the center told reporters Friday that he experienced a four-to-five day setback after a drill. The 25-year-old Bynum, who is rehabbing from bone bruises in both knees, took part in a five-on-zero drill last week. The drill was the first time he had been able to be involved in any practice since Philly traded for him last summer.“I played in LA with a bit of swelling, but it wasn’t this bad,” Bynum said. “I didn’t really feel the pain when I was playing, but now it’s like really stiff and a lot of pain. Just doing stuff, not even full five-on-five stuff. I played in one scrimmage and it’s a 4- to 5-day setback.”Bynum had been confident all season long that rest and rehabilitation would allow him to make it back to the court this season.“It’s getting late. I don’t know [about playing this season],” Bynum said. “I don’t want to play in pain. … I’m 25, it’s my life.”When Bynum was asked if surgery was an option, he said that there were no surgical procedures possible that could help him return to the 76ers before the season ends. The 76ers could use Bynum’s presence because they are currently 22-34 and in last place in the Eastern Conference with 26 games remaining. They have dropped their last seven games. But 76ers coach Doug Collins said Thursday after seeing Bynum workout, that the player was still in no condition to return.“I know it’s tough on him, he wants to play,” Collins said. “We traded for him to come in here and play, and he hasn’t been able to and that’s hard. Hard on him and hard on everyone, and so I feel badly.”Before being traded to the 76ers last summer, Bynum played in 60 of 66 games with the Los Angeles Lakers last season. He had a surgical procedure in September in Germany  to strengthen his knees. During the procedure, doctors discovered a bone bruise in his right knee. While recovering, two months later Bynum tweaked his left knee while bowling friends, and doctors discovered a bone bruise in that knee as well.Bynum could potentially lose millions of dollars if he is unable to return to the court this season. He is currently making $16.9 million this season and will become a free agent in July.“I think being healthy is more important than everything else,” he said. “If I am healthy, I’ll get a deal. I have to be able to play and I need to get to the point with my body where I’m able to play, however long that takes.” read more

New categories for legal fishing proposed in Parks amendments bill

first_img Recommended for you Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 17 Dec 2015 – The National Parks Amendments will create a new category for fishing if approved as is; Director Dr. John Claydon in a one on one with Magnetic Media said the two categories will expand where fishing can happen while preventing destructive practices. The change is to make current ‘fishing zones’ to be ‘non commercial fishing zones’ which means for residents there is a greater area protected for recreational fishing that is non commercial. The term ‘fishing zones’ will allow both commercial and recreational fishing to happen and three national parks will be expanded to give the fishing industry more places within which to fish. The proposal names them as: Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park, West Caicos Marine National Park and East Bay Islands National Park. Dr. Claydon said the proposals were determined by the National Parks Ordinance Review Committee. The members of the Committee were representatives of the Office of the Premier, Environment and Home Affairs, Attorney General’s Chambers, DEMA, National Trust, Planning Department, Water Sports interests, members of the Public and the Opposition party. The amendments which span 65 pages in a document posted at the DEMA website are already Cabinet approved, but the public contribution will be presented to Cabinet for further considerations.
